On October 3, The University of Kansas Medical Center
began hosting the “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians” traveling exhibit at Dykes Library. Along with displaying the exhibit’s accounts of outstanding female contributions to medicine, Dykes Library has organized complementary events throughout the city.
The exhibit opened with a lecture, “Honoring Those Who’ve Come Before,” by featured former medical school dean, Dr. Marjorie Sirridge. The following week, Dr. Iris Litt from Stanford University’s Department of Pediatrics spoke on the topic of female influence in medicine (“Women: Changing the Face of Pediatrics”). Patricia Gallagher from the New York Academy of Medicine addressed the depictions of women doctors in movies, and Dr. Nancy Wilson Dickey, the first woman president of the American Medical Association, and featured in the exhibit, lectured on her experience as a woman in the health profession. The Medical Center is also featuring lectures and performance readings on fostering cultural and ethnic diversity and new perspectives in medicine. The exhibit will close with a lecture on the life and medical achievements of Marie Zakrzewska, who founded the New England Hospital for Women and Children, which was run entirely by female physicians.
In addition to these events, four Kansas City medical and science libraries have developed an interactive workshop for students to experience different aspects of medicine. The workshop will provide students with the opportunity to explore the electronic medical resources of the university libraries, learn how to take blood pressure and heart rate readings, extract DNA from wheat germ, learn about health care careers, and much more.
The “Changing the Face of Medicine” exhibit will be at Dykes Library until November 11.
The ALA Public Programs Office offers grants that provide the essential resources, funding, visibility, and framework needed for libraries to conduct high-quality cultural programs.
