Halloween at your library

When you hear “library Halloween programs” you probably think of a Trick-Or-Treat story time or a teen Halloween party. But adults can enjoy Halloween programs as well. With the right partners, Halloween programs can be affordable, educational and entertaining for adult library users. We hold many of the programs on weekends or in the evening so working adults can attend.

Think food programs are too pricey for your library? Think again! The Leesburg (Fla.) Public Library is successfully hosting an ongoing series of culinary programs without breaking the bank. We’ve partnered with several local businesses, organizations and writers to bring our community this delicious series of programs. The programs feature cooking demos, health and nutrition classes and even put an edible spin on youth and teen programs. Here are some food programs you can try at your library:

Stand up against stigma: No health without mental health

For over 65 years, May has been observed as Mental Health Month. Each year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. One in five people will suffer from a mental illness this year; half of them will not get treatment. Often this is due to a lack of information about where to get affordable treatment.

Tents and patrons at the Literary Arts Festival
I don’t know about your community, but my small Florida town loves outdoor festivals. We have celebrations for everything: Bikefest, Corn Fest, Arts Fest, Craft Beer & Food Fest, etc. Being located on Main Street in the heart of downtown, my library is often filled with festival-goers using our restrooms and enjoying our air conditioning and water fountains. The library does book displays that fit the themes of whatever events are going on within the community. Chili Cook Off? Jazz Festival? Easter Egg Hunt? We have a book for that.
