Carlton Sears

Carlton Sears is a Harwood certified coach with 40 years' experience leveraging the assets of public institutions to strengthen communities. The Harwood Institute came to his attention while executive director of a 200-employee nonprofit corporation that operates a library system. Harwood’s insights to the underlying conditions of change resonated immediately with Carlton’s years of experience in nonprofit and governmental sectors in New York, Alabama, North Carolina and Ohio. Those insights found their way into his organization’s strategic plan, and the rest is history. Today the library has successfully transformed into a trusted community asset and annual income has doubled to $18 million. Carlton recently retired from the library system to become a full-time Harwood coach — supporting others desiring to make good on their urge to do good.

In addition to a master’s in library science, Carlton is a graduate of the Kellogg Leadership Institute and serves in leadership positions with Rotary, Salvation Army, his church, a children’s science center and a regional addiction treatment and prevention agency.

Jean Herriges

Jean Herriges is the acting assistant director of the San Jose Public Library, where the Harwood practice is being deployed in seven family literacy branches. Each of these branches has held several Harwood Community Conversations in libraries and in community locations, and the conversations have already led to increases in volunteers and ESL programming for immigrant parents and children. The success experienced so far in the family literacy branches led San Jose to recently announce the expansion of the Harwood practice to all its branches. Jean is supporting this new initiative with a core group of staff dedicated to the system’s being Turned Outward. Jean holds a master's degree in library and information science from San Jose State University, in addition to an MA from the University of California, Davis and a BA from UC Santa Cruz.

Mike Wood

Mike Wood is executive vice president for the Harwood Institute, where he is responsible for developing and growing the Institute’s alliances with nonprofit and corporate partners, as well as overall business development and resource generation. He brings to the Institute deep experience in community and political organizing, organizational change, customer relationship management, fundraising and community engagement. Mike, a former Harwood staffer who returned in September 2013, is a well-respected leader in the social and civic change sector and has a strong track record of leveraging the Harwood Institute’s frameworks and approaches to drive large-scale change.
