STEM at the ALA Annual Conference

Editor’s Note: June is all about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) here at Programming Librarian, and we’re kicking things off with a comprehensive list of STEM-related programming at the 2013 ALA Annual Conference. Just click on each link to find our more and add the event to your scheduler. Hope to see you there!

You Don’t Have to Be a Rocket Scientist to Bring NASA into Your Children’s and Youth Programs

Young patrons are launching the rockets they built. Eating cookies they’ve carved into Moon shapes. Studying the lava flows on a Martian volcano (i.e., layers of Play-Doh shaped by a vinegar-and-baking soda “eruption”). Using tools to investigate “mystery balloons” filled with objects that mimic the surprises scientists love to uncover by studying other planets. Children ages eight to thirten do all this and more as they investigate Earth and the solar system in the library through hands-on activities from the Lunar and Planetary Institute’s Explore program.

Featured Library: Ridgefield Library

This month, we’re highligting the Ridgefield (Conn.) Library for its long-running STEM program. Launched in 2005, the Donofrio Technology Series, Inspiring Kids in Science, is “an ongoing series of programs, workshops and events that aim to inspire young people, especially girls and minority students, to pursue science and engineering through school, college and beyond.”

Bring the Excitement of NASA’s Mars Explorations to Your Youth Programs

The Lunar and Planetary Institute is hosting a FREE NASA-supported training, Explore: Life on Mars?, which will be held in conjunction with the 2012 MPLA/NLA/NEMA Tri-Conference. This two-day training features hands-on activities and supporting resources about NASA’s investigations in the scientific field of astrobiology—the search for indications that Mars may be (or has been) able to support life. Plus, learn about NASA’s latest mission to Mars, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), and the ChemCam instrument onboard the Curiosity rover!

Help Connect Girls with Science

The SciGirls CONNECT Program is looking for organizations that are committed to gender-equitable STEM programming for girls ages 8–13 to join our growing list of partners. We encourage all applicants to collaborate with at least one additional organization in their community—examples of eligible organizations, include Girls Scouts, Girls Inc., Boys and Girls Clubs, 4-H, science centers, aquariums, after-school programs, etc.
