American Girl Doll Mystery Event

Our library has a collection of American Girl Dolls and a multicultural collection with artifacts from all over the world. Both circulating collections are very popular.

We decided to create a program linking the artifacts to the historical American Girl dolls based on the characters’ causes, the beliefs they stood for, and what their corresponding books are about.

Girls in Engineering, Math and Science (GEMS) Workshop

GEMS participants

Girls in Engineering, Math and Science (GEMS) is a weekly STEM workshop series for teenage girls offered at five of our library system’s locations during the month of June. Participants get to meet influential women in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, learn about STEM opportunities and get hands-on experience with STEM technologies.

Each two-hour session consists of a presentation from a female professional in a STEM field, followed by a one-hour activity that explores and builds STEM skills among the participants.

Strong Girls School

Strong Girls School is a young adult program that addresses gender bias, inequality and self-esteem-building for girls.

I got the idea for Strong Girls in 2012 after reading YA author Maureen Johnson’s essay, “Why Do We Photoshop People?” with my writing group, who were, coincidentally, all girls. It sparked so much discussion about beauty, body image, self-esteem and the media that I knew there was a program there.
