ALA's Sara Jaffarian Award Presents - Growing Readers, Growing Leaders: Fostering Bi-literate, Bi-Cultural, and Bi-Lingual Students

Learn about the serendipitous adventures of two educators at Hawthorne Elementary School who used Guided Inquiry Design to foster bi-literate, bi-cultural and bi-lingual learners.

In this free 60-minute webinar, participants will hear from staff at Hawthorne Elementary School (KY), winner of ALA's 2023 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming, as they discuss their winning program and share tips for school library professionals interested in developing a similar program.

When we began developing a unit of learning framed using the Guided Inquiry Design, we had no idea this adventure would lead to so many learning experiences for our students, staff, and ourselves!

Through the Guided Inquiry Design framework, we focused on student engagement, authentic learning, and reflection while mastering research skills. Our initial focus was to create a presentation for the October Hispanic Heritage Festival that showcased our Hispanic/Latinx families.  

As in life, opportunities began to weave into our activities and before long, we found ourselves engaging with great collaborations between our students, staff and others outside of our building. ​

Our goal with this presentation is to share our adventure and inspire you to find fellow innovators and create learning opportunities that change both you, your fellow teachers and students too!

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to: 

  • Better understand the collaborative process for deeper learning experiences in our school.
  • Learn methods for seeking out opportunities for collaboration outside of their school.
  • Become willing to take risks and have fun learning, too.'

Jamey Herdelin began her career as a public school elementary educator 24 years ago; 22 as a librarian/media specialist. Her passion for teaching stems from her curiosity and love of learning.  Jamey’s PhD from Bellarmine University focused on the use of eBooks in k-5 literacy instruction.  This experience built her knowledge of and skills to foster change; change occurs when a person has the self-efficacy to implement the change and sees the value in doing so. This is the foundation of her library program especially when collaborating with educators; helping them to integrate relevant and responsive resources in their classrooms.


Ashleigh Glickley is National Board Certified with 15 years of experience in Dual Language programs.  Her passion for bilingual education began as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala indigenous schools. Ashleigh leads teachers in developing Spanish language curricula and assessment guides. Her work was highlighted in the 2018 Louisville Magazine’s Person of the Year.  Recent accomplishments include being a national faculty for PBLWorks. The National Geographic Education blog highlighted her work implementing the National Geographic Explorer’s Mindset and collaboration with female scientists working on ocean conservation.  “Personalized learning experiences as well as opportunities to interact directly with experts in the field result in transformative, long-lasting learning for students.”
