Bloomfield, Connecticut is a suburb of the capital city of Hartford. The population of close to 22,000 people represents a large diaspora of races and backgrounds, but the largest demographic populations are white, non-Hispanic Latino and Black or African American. Of note is the public school population which is primarily Black or African American. Bloomfield Public Library (BPL) supports the town with a main library (Prosser Library), a branch library (P. Faith McMahon Wintonbury Library), and a “third location” with all of its online resources. Prosser Library is currently being rebuilt from the ground up, and the branch location is simultaneously undergoing significant renovations. BPL is currently located in a temporary location on the Cigna campus in town, with the 2 libraries anticipated to re-open in late Spring/Summer of 2025. Over the years, BPL staff have noticed a growing number of community members striving to become published authors, often self-publishing and gifting copies of their books to BPL. In recent years, the number of young residents proclaiming an interest in being authors has also grown. I have personally connected with multiple kids/teens who are self-publishing. I am also currently leading an afterschool club (Extreme Artists Club) at Carmen Arace Intermediate School (grades 5-6) where all of the club members are aiming to be published comic/graphic authors and artists.
