The Central Library serves all of Monroe County, a population of 750,000. Monroe County includes the city of Rochester (population 250,000) and the surrounding suburban areas. Monroe County is socioeconomically diverse. In the city itself, 52% of children live in poverty; less than half of students in the Rochester City School District graduate on time and of those 22% drop out completely. Surrounding suburbs are affluent and boast some of the country’s best school systems.
