The Chatham Area Public Library is a single branch, small library district which primarily serves the Village of Chatham, IL whose population is just around 13,000. Approximately ten miles outside of the capital city, Chatham’s population, although predominately white, has increased and diversified in terms of both race and class over the past decade. Acknowledging this change in demographics and the country’s call for racial justice, the Library recently signed onto the Urban Libraries Council’s Statement on Race and Social Equity and is working toward lifting and encouraging conversations around a variety of social justice topics.
