St. Joseph Public Library (SJPL) is a four-branch library system located in the eighth largest city in Missouri, serving over 72,000 people. The largest branch within the system, East Hills Library, is staffed by one full-time youth services librarian and two part-time youth services librarians, in addition to a 12 person circulation desk staff. The East Hills Library also hosts within its building the St. Joseph Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, making it a popular stop for out-of-town guests. In 2015, the East Hills library converted an unoccupied café area into a Makerspace, increasing hands-on program opportunities within the community.
