Decorate Your Graduation Cap

Local graduating seniors are invited to take over the library and decorate their graduation caps. All supplies provided.

Advanced Planning

Our goals were to provide a fun experience for local graduates and to allow them to personalize their graduation look to represent who they are/who they want to grow up to be. We started by requesting permission to encourage cap decorating from our local high school. We also asked the community for donations of craft supplies, scrapbook paper, faux florals, etc., before we started purchasing supplies.

Marketing

We promoted through the high school by hanging fliers six weeks before and having them announce on the intercom the week before and the day of.

Budgeting

Supplies. Ask the community for donations and think outside the box. A few things we purchased specially for the event were not used, and things we’ve had in our craft closet for years were used.

Day-of-event Activity

We set craft supplies out on tables and carts. We plugged in the glue guns about ten minutes before arrivals. An unexpected challenge was finding enough table space for everyone to spread out their craft supplies and create. One staff member and one volunteer were present.

Program Execution

Six teens attended. They’re a graduating class of 16, so a good portion came out.

Advice

Purchase pre-made cap toppers for graduates to decorate. It gave them relief that they could mess up, and it wouldn’t ruin their cap. Also, some graduates don’t purchase their caps but borrow them from school, so having a topper to attach without damaging the cap allows them to participate.
