Circulating Board Game Collection

Women playing a game

The Circulating Board Game Collection consists of 150 modern board games that circulate at each of our seven branches. The collection is expanded each year to include newly released games, more strategy games, and games for children. Each game is cataloged, and the components are bagged and inventoried.

We offer the games with rules in multiple languages to meet the needs of our growing immigrant community, and we also offer games with less text and more iconography for patrons will limited sight.

College & Me

Students taking notes in class

College & Me is a multi-series offering — provided in partnership with the local Utah State University Extension office — that provides a comprehensive view of how individuals can prepare to attend college. Open to teens and adults, the class covers basic steps to searching for scholarships and financial aid, along with some application tips and FAFSA best practices.

TEDxYDL: 'Invent. Create. Change.'

Speaker at TedxYDL next to PowerPoint presentation

TED talks — Technology, Education, Design — are an international phenomenon where speakers share big ideas in short, inspiring speeches. TEDxYDL (Ypsilanti District Library) is an independently organized event in the spirit of TED talks. The audience hears from local speakers on a variety of topics around the theme "Invent. Create. Change."

Beyond Database Instruction: Genealogy Programs for Patrons

Magnifying glass

Library databases are wonderful places for patrons to begin their genealogical journey — but what happens when they’ve exhausted their Ancestry.com search? And what will they do with all of the information they’ve acquired? With so many national observances honoring heritage, it’s always a good time to offer programs that help patrons trace their roots and showcase their histories. Here are four ways you can empower your patrons to tell their stories through programming.

True Crime Book Club

Various covers of true crime books used in the book club.

The true crime genre is very popular with podcasts, documentaries, and of course, books! True Crime Book Club uses true crime non-fiction to explore social issues such as mental health, racism and substance abuse.

Navajo Astronomy

Photograph of night sky lit up with stars.

Navajo Astronomy was a hybrid program comprised of three virtual and in-person sessions presented in both the English and Diné languages during the winter months of January through early March. The program described traditional Navajo astronomy, constellations, and the unique way in which Navajo people view the cosmos. Presentations covered winter storytelling and discussions of Navajo culture and ceremonies.

Traditionally, winter stories are only told during the winter months which meant that the library was culturally not allowed to record the stories.

Bridgerton High Tea

Text reads: Bridgerton High Tea. Photographs show marketing fliers created for the event.

Bridgerton High Tea is a program that combines a discussion of the "Bridgerton" novels and Netflix series with a classy afternoon tea and flower-arranging demonstration.

Some participants dressed to the nines in gowns, gloves and tiaras. Regardless of attire, participants were treated to a spread of scones and teapots filled to the brim with hot tea.

Harry Potter Bingo

A pile of red and white bingo cards with some scattered bingo chips

Harry Potter-themed events for adults do really well at our library. Previously we have had Harry Potter Trivia Nights, DIY Harry Potter Crafts and a Harry Potter Escape Room.

We wanted to continue this magical tradition with a new type of program, and Harry Potter Bingo was the winner. Our goal for this program was for adults to view the library as a place to connect and engage with other community members.

Amazing Race Scavenger Hunt

Hands holding a treasure map

Corning Public Library serves a town of 1,500 in southwest Iowa. There's not a lot in Corning; we are the largest town in our county, the nearest city is a 90-minute drive away.

The library is especially important in communities like ours, as we provide programming that both entertains and inspires. Hosting an Amazing Race program allowed us to entertain our patrons while showing them that they don’t have to travel to find interesting things to do with their friends and families.

DIY Chunky Knit Blanket Class

DIY Chunky Blanket

The DIY Chunky Knit Blanket Class teaches patrons, ages teen through adult, to knit a cozy throw blanket with no special tools required. The class is free; participants only need to bring their own yarn.

Our goal was to provide a fun, inexpensive craft for people who could not afford, or travel, to attend a class in another city.

Twiddlemuffs for Charity

Completed Twiddlemuffs

The Crafting for Charity group has existed at the Morton Grove Public Library since 2014. They meet once a month to work on their current project, choosing each project based on needs in the community.

Most recently the group undertook a project to create 75 Twiddlemuffs — knitted or crocheted hand muffs with various items (buttons, beads, etc.) attached — which serve the dual purpose of keeping hands warm while giving the fidgeting hands of many Alzheimer’s patients something to play with.
