Talking Tales

Storyteller in the middle of an audience, seated in a round

Talking Tales offers patrons an opportunity to experience the world’s oldest art form — oral storytelling — while also learning new things about cultures around the world.

The program begins with a local storytelling troupe, the East Texas Storytellers, telling tall tales, folktales, myths and legends. Many months are themed around a particular idea or country. After the stories, the storytellers and presenter explore their tales, their origins and the region they came from in a format similar to a Q&A or talk show.

Boulder Library Concert Series

A band sitting on the stage floor performing

Music is a powerful connecting force in Boulder, and our library's Concert Series has become a symbol of quality programming in our community. Featuring highly accomplished local to international musicians, our free concerts offer something for every taste: reflective meditations, lively jazz performances, inspiring string quartets and more.

We welcome patrons of all ages to experience live performances throughout the year. Concerts take place in our 200-seat Canyon Theater, which typically fills to capacity.

Evening Storytelling: The Moth Mainstage and Story Lounge

An important function of our library is to provide a space for our community members to feel connected to one another and share their own stories with each other. Last fall, Princeton Public Library (PPL) focused our efforts on storytelling, highlighting the many ways that stories can be shared: poetry, memoirs, graphic novels, performance, quilting and more.

Small Library, Big Community: Soup and Sound

Patrons at Slater Public Library share a meal and prepare to listen to entertainment at Soup and Sound

At Slater (Iowa) Public Library, we find that it's usually tough to get adults to attend programs. But we have also seen a few notable exceptions, one of which is our Soup and Sound program. As the name suggests, this consists of serving a meal and providing entertainment to attendees. Soup and Sound is not only popular — it's fun, community-building, and we've been able to cover our program costs with donations.

Murder in the Library

The murder suspects

We recently started an annual murder mystery program in our library, inviting patrons to both witness and interact with the drama as it unfolds.

After purchasing a murder mystery kit online and enlisting the performance skills of local actors and library staff, the program came together fairly easily. The event attracted 100 participants, appealing especially to our senior patrons.
